Ghadir Stadium History
Construction on Foolad F.C’s brand new stadium may have began in February 2006, however the architectural drawings on which it is based date as far back as the 1970s – some 36 years before any spade touched the ground.
The original concepts were designed by Zohreh Malileh Farshid back in 1974, who at the time was one of the country’s first female architects. Ambitious for its time even by today’s standards, Ghadir Stadium remains the third largest football ground in Iran.
Envisioned as the centrepiece of the 1984 Olympic Games, Farshid’s dream never came reality due to the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and the start of the war against Iraq two years later in 1978.
Although plans to construct the stadium were revived in the 1990s it wasn’t until relative Geopolitical stability was achieved almost 15 years later than Ghadir Stadium began to become a reality.
The ceremonial ground breaking ceremony on 2nd February 2006 was attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who gave his backing to the stadium. The stadium now joins the other sports facilities which were previously built in 1998 and 2002.
