Incheon Football Stadium History

The inaugural match at the Sungui Arena Park was played on 11th March 2012 between Incheon United, and visitors Suwon Samsung Bluewings. Constructed over a period of four years between 2008 and 2012, the stadium certainly wasn’t the first purpose built football ground in Korea, however it does boast the shortest distance between the stands and the pitch at less than 1 metre.

Costing 1,120 billion won which equates to around $110 million, Sungui Arena Park replaced Soongeui Stadium which was demolished to make way for the new stadium on 13th June 2008. Although the working name of the project was Sungui/Soongeui Arena Park, the stadium was christened Incheon Football Stadium a month before opening.

Named after resident side Incheon United who first participated in the K-League in 2004, Incheon Football Stadium has yet to host matches outside of the domestic league yet.

The club achieved a second place finish in their second ever season, but have been unable to build upon this since. Two Cup Final appearances in 2010 and 2013 nearly granted Incheon a route into the AFC Champions League, however they lost on both occasions.

On 6th September 2013 almost a year after opening Incheon Football Stadium hosted its first ever International match. The Republic of Korea took on the small Caribbean country of Haiti, and triumphed 4-1 in a relatively competitive match.
