Suwon World Cup Stadium History

Suwon World Cup Stadium was constructed for the 2002 World Cup which South Korea co-hosted with Japan, and was one of twenty venues used to host football matches of the tournament. Built over a period just under five years beginning on 15th November 1996, the inaugural match was held on May 3rd 2001 between Suwon High School team and a youth side from FC Barcelona.

In total Suwon World Cup Stadium hosted four matches of the tournament including three group matches: USA v Portugal (3-2), Senegal v Uruguay (3-3), and Costa Rica v Brazil (2-5).

The highest profile game of the tournament was arguably the Round of 16 between Spain and The Republic of Ireland. The game ended in a 1-1 draw in extra time, and was subsequently decided on penalties which Spain won in dramatic fashion.

As part of the World Cup’s sustainable legacy the stadium was also designed to become the home of Suwon Samsung Bluewings F.C after the tournament. The club were formed in August 1995 as the 9th member of the K-League with their own facilities, and thus it made economic sense to fund a football stadium for the city of Suwon.

As one of the K-League Classics most successfully clubs, The Suwon World Cup Stadium has hosted several important matches in its short history. Two stand out matches were the 2001 and 2002 finals of the Asian Club Championships which were the predecessor to the Champions League. Suwon defeated Jubilo Iwata, and FC Seoul to lift back to back trophies, with the first final held at Suwon WC Stadium.
