Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium History
Construction on Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium began in 2001, and lasted for a period of approximately three years. It was built as the centrepiece for the 2004 National Games (Pekan Olahraga Nasional) which is a mainly Athletics Competition.
Situated within the area of Palembang in South Sumatra, the ground was originally named after its location, and thus was conceived as Jakabaring Stadium upon opening.
It was later renamed in honour of the former Indonesian Empire of “Gelora Sriwijaya” which ruled the country between the 7th and 13th Centuries.
Gelora Sriwijaya was designed as a multi-purpose stadium from the outset, and to this day it is still used to host a mixture of football and athletics competitions. It is currently scheduled to host part of the 2018 Asian Games, after hosting the Southeast Asian Games in 2011.
Sriwijaya FC’s stadium forms part of the Jakabaring Sport City Complex which contains numerous sporting facilities. The design of the two main stands resemble the sails of ships and are said to symbolise the country’s former maritime empire.
