Persiba Stadium or Newcastle Stadium in English is a multi-purpose sports stadium located in the Indonesian city of Balikpapan. Capable of accommodating 10,000 supporters it is home to local football team Persiba Balikpapan.
Persiba Stadium is one of the smallest football grounds within the Super League and the 10,000 capacity alludes to Persiba Balikpapan’s history within the lower tiers of Indonesian Football.
When Persiba Balikpapan earned promotion to the Super League in 2008- the highest division the stadium underwent minor renovation work in order to prepare it for the upcoming season.
The most notable improvements made to the ground were the installation of high-quality floodlights in order to permit the hosting of night time matches as per Super League regulations, as well as the addition of modern plastic seating.
In order to improve the matchday experience for the two teams and the referee match day facilities such as the dressing rooms, and playing surface were significantly upgraded.
As for the future of Persiba Stadium which translates into English as Newcastle Stadium, there’s suggestions that the capacity of the ground could be increased by 50% to 15,000 within the coming seasons. Watch this space.
