Surajaya Stadium History
Stadion Surajava was constructed in a convenient location along the main road less than 10 minutes from the train station. This means that the city of Lamongan is connected with Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, and Gresik which is the capital of the East Java Province.
The resident side Persela Lamongan were founded back in 18th April 1967, however they more or less re-established themselves after the creation of the Indonesian Super League. Prior to 2003 the club had played their football within the lowest tiers of Indonesian Football.
Subsequently there has been very little urgency to expand Surajaya Stadium throughout the course of the club’s history. Capable of accommodating up to 15,000 supporters per match, this provided more than enough seats to match the demand for matchday tickets.
In August 2015 renovation work aiming to modernise the facilities was carried out on Stadion Surajava. The tired old turf will be replaced by a new playing surface which meets International standards amongst other minor modifications.
Outside the main entrance of the stadium there is a monument of a Milkfish and Catfish which depicts the two creatures featured on the city of Lamongan’s coat of arms. Surajaya is also used to house the main headquarters of Persela Lamongan.
