Beroe Stadium History

Beroe Stadium first opened on 4th April 1959 although there is no official record of whether or not a match was held to mark this occasion. Like the a lot of municipally owned stadiums in Bulgaria, the football grounds forms part of a wider sporting complex which contains facilities which cover such disciplines as gymnastics, acrobatics, tennis, and boxing.

The stadium’s capacity peaked in the latter half of the 20th century when the record attendance  of 42,000 was set during a match against Levski Sofia. After increasingly stringent safety stadium regulations in the wake of high profile stadium disasters which occurred in the 1980s, the stadiums capacity now sits at a reduced 12,128 although it is theoretically capable of seating 15,000.

As Vasil Levski Stadium is regarded as the defacto home of the national team, Beroe Stadium is yet to host International matches, however it has hosted qualifying games of the under 21s and under 17s youth teams.

The first such game was held on 21st October against Spain (1-0) for the 2013 UEFA Euro under 17s, and most recently Beroe hosted an under 21s Euro qualifier on 19th November against Slovenia (1-5).

As for the future of the stadium it appears as if Beroe FC are likely to stay at the stadium for the next couple of years. Renovation work was only just carried out in 2013, not to mention the installation of new floodlights and scoreboards back in October 2011.
