Ovcha Kupel Stadium History
The current version of Ovcha Kupel Stadium first opened in 1958, with the original ground located on the same site dating back to the 1920s. Forming part of a wider sporting complex as per is customary for municipally owned stadiums in Bulgaria, the ground today is capable of seating 15,992 supporters.
In recent years starting in 2009, it is has officially been recognised as the home stadium of Bulgaria’s Under 21s National Team.
In April 2014 PFC Slavia announced that they have enlisted the help of German company IFS in order to expand the stadium to 24,000 in the next few years, with the possibility of expansion to 33,000 via temporary seating.
Targeting a completion date of 2020, the plan is to build a stadium capable of hosting International matches of the Bulgarian Men’s Team, and has been backed by the Bulgarian Football Union.
