Stadion Aldo Drosina History

The current iteration of Aldo Drosina Stadium was constructed over a two year period between March 2009 and January 2011, with the existing facilities formerly known as Gradski Stadion, undergoing heavy reconstruction. The inaugural match of the new stadium was held between Croatia and Czech Republic in an international friendly which resulted in a pleasing 4-2 win for the home side.

Located within the north-west coastal city of Pula, the stadium is owned by the municipality and in 2003 the decision was made to rename the stadium in honour of Aldo Drosina. Famous for both playing for and managing the resident side, NK Istra, Aldo sadly passed away on the 17th February 2000 at the age of 68 is considered by many to be a local footballing icon.

The stadium currently has a capacity of 9,200, with the reconstruction of the West Stand contributing the largest section of seating to the stadium. Essentially the main stand, it received a roof to become fully covered, whilst the remaining three stands were reconfigured with seating and to this day remain exposed to the elements.

As for the future of Stadion Aldo Drosina, it’s unlikely that the stadium will undergoing any further expansion in the coming years as NK Istra 1961 seldom sell out their home fixtures. Whilst the club are usually guaranteed to stay in the Croatian top-flight, European football has often eluded the club with Dinamo Zagreb and HNK Rijeka currently being the highest UEFA ranked teams in the country.
