Yadegar-e Emam Stadium – Tabriz History
The inaugural match was played on 19th January 1996 between resident side Tractor Sazi and their local rivals Machine Sazi Tabriz F.C. Yadegar-e Emam replaced Bagh Shomal Stadium (Takhti Stadium) which had been the club’s home since 1976 when it was built for the AFC Asian Cup.
Yadegar-e Emam Stadium’s construction period of around seven years is testament to the sheer size and scale of the venue, with the 80,451 capacity ground the second largest in Iran behind the Azadi Tehran Stadium which has approximately 4,000 more seats.
Designed by architect Mohammad Alvand and constructed at a cost of over 6 billion tomans, Sahand Tabriz Stadium is essentially the focal point of wider Tabriz Olympic Village which hosts a multitude of sports facilities.
Between the 2005 and 2006 season Tractor Sazi temporarily relocated to the Bakeri Stadium as Yadegar-e Emam underwent a program of modernisation. The basic facilities were renovated, and a new state-of-the-art scoreboard was added in addition to a further 5,000 seats.
As Iran’s second largest stadium, Yadegar-e Emam Stadium has on occasion hosted International matches of the Iranian National Team. A qualification match for the 2018 World Cup against India is set to be played on 24th March 2016.
