Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium History
The inaugural fixture at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium was set to see Manchester City taken on home side Al Ain F.C on 14th January 2014, however the match was postponed until the end of the season after City drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers in the F.A Cup which prompted a replay.
Constructed over a 16 month period starting on 1st June 2012, the stadium was designed by British architecture group, Pattern Design Limited.
Taking inspiration from the natural patterns found on the trunks of palm trees, the exterior shell is comprised of numerous panels which can be adjusted to maximise airflow.
Similar to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, the panels contain LED lights which are capable of being illuminated in over 15 different colours. Combined with the unique shape of the parasol roof which provides shade throughout both the ground, it’s easy to see why Hazza Bin Zayed is one of the most unique stadiums in the Middle East.
Costing a reported $170 million U.S dollars, the stadium forms part of a wider commercial centre which spans over 500,000 square metres. The city of Al Ain will also gain over 700 apartments, a 200 room hotel and over 50 restaurants and shops.
