Can Tho Stadium was originally constructed during the French Colonial Period, however the version of the ground as we know it today dates back to 1981 when it underwent substantial renovation work.
Multi-purpose by design it has long hosted the football matches of local side Can Tho F.C, however attendances for these matches are generally quite poor. Even in the 1990s when the club were enjoying their most successful period in their history, attendances only averaged 10,000 spectators per match.
Within the city motorcycle racing or “the people’s sport” is arguably more popular which goes some way to explain attendance figures.
Can Tho Stadium is equipped with a 4 lane motorcycle track which runs around the perimeter of the pitch, and is used several times a year to host races.
Although the figure of 50,000 for the stadium’s capacity was previously accurate, it is no longer correct after the stadium was converted to all-seating in 2012. This removed the 5,000 or so terrace places ultimately reducing the capacity to just 45,000.
