Maguwoharjo Stadium History
Maguwoharjo International Stadium was constructed over a two year period between 2005 and 2007 at a reported cost of 100 billion Rupiah which equates to around $100 million US dollars.
The construction phase was extended slightly after the building site sustained damage as a result of the earthquake which struck on 27th May 2006. Thankfully the impact was minor and the foundations of the stadium were fine.
One of the first purpose built football stadiums in the country, Maguwoharjo follows the tradition of European Stadium and is even affectionately known as the “Mini San Siro” after Milan’s Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
Rectangular in shape, Stadion Maguwoharjo bucks the trend of Indonesian football grounds by not featuring an athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch. This results in intimate views and one of the best matchday experiences across the Indonesian Super League.
If rumours are to be believed then there is the strong possibility that the 40,000 capacity ground could be extended to 50,000 in the coming years. Modular in design, additional tiers of seating could easily be added to sections of the stadium, most notably the two uncovered goal-ends.
