The Float at Marina Bay History

The iconic floating bay stadium was borne out of necessity and is largely the result of innovate thinking by the organising committee of Singapore’s National Day Parade. With the National Stadium demolished in 2004 and expected to be rebuilt over the course of the next 8 years, the annual event needed a new home for the foreseeable future.

With urban regeneration already occurring at the Marina Bay , Colonel Teo Jing Siong and his committee settled on the Float after finding the solution to be more cost effective than leasing the Jalan Besar Stadium and other sports facilities.

Designed by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, construction began in March 2006 and took just over 13 months to complete. Comprised of 15 jigsaw interlocking jigsaw pieces, and six pylons attached to the seabed, the Float @ Marina Bay is an expert piece of modern day engineering.

The main stand which is capable of seating 30,000 spectators was designed to be as low profile as possible and to compliment the back urban environment. Divided into five blocks of seating, the five different coloured seats add a splash of vibrancy to the gentrified Marina Bay area.

The inaugural football match to take place was scheduled to be 2008 Singapore Cup Final however it was relocated due to inadequate lightning conditions. The first match subsequently played at the Float was therefore an amateur match between local sides Tuan Gemuk Athletic and VNNTU FC.
