Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium - Ulsan Hyundai Stadium Guide

Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium was purpose built for the 2002 World Cup which South Korea co-hosted with Japan. Selected as one of twenty host venues for the tournament, the stadium was constructed over a three year period between 18th December 1998 and 28th April 2001.

Costing an estimated 151.4 billion won which equates to around $116.5 million, the stadium was designed to blend in seamlessly with the industrial city of Ulsan, and is commonly known as Big Crown Stadium. The exterior of the stadium, most notably the spiky roof design is said to represent Silla which was one of the three Kingdoms of Korea and the Bangudae Petroglyphs which is a listed as a National Treasure.

Capable of seating 44,466 supporters, the Football Stadium is located within Munsu Park which previously housed the old Ulsan Complex Stadium before it was demolished to make way for new facilities. Completed in time to host matches of the Confederations Cup in 2001, this tournament has traditionally been used as a curtain-raiser to the World Cup, and was used to safety test Ulsan Munsu.

In total Ulsan Munsu Football stadium hosted three matches of the tournament: Denmark v Uruguay (2-1), Brazil v Turkey (2-1), and Germany v USA (1-0). The latter game was a quarter final match, and was undoubtedly the highest profile game the stadium hosted during the tournament.

Since opening Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium has been home to Ulsan Hyundai who famously lifted the 2012 AFC Champions League title after qualifying from a group which contained FC Tokyo, Brisbane Roar and Beijing Guoan.

Ulsan Munsu Stadium consists of the following four stands: North, East, South and West.
