Bazaly Stadium History

Bazaly Stadium first opened on 19th April 1959 in order to replace the club’s former Stará st?elnice stadium which failed to meet the league’s requirements due to the pitch being covered in slag. Despite appearing to be constructed in a design which is resembles other municipally owned stadiums across Europe, the stadium is privately owned by FC Bank Ostrava.

Whilst the stadium’s basic structure has changed very little since first opening, modest renovations have occurred over the years which have resulted in the capacity being slowly reduced from the initial 30,000.

The ground was somewhat modernised in 2003 after the club spent 1 million euros improving the facilities. The money was used across several areas including on the installation of blue plastic seating, on the refurbishment of the changing rooms,  and on VIP areas and press centre.

A season later in 2004 a more durable pitch was laid, and ten years later the stadium was expanded to 10,039. However the ground still fails to meet the International requirements of both FIFA and UEFA, and thus Ostrava cannot host matches of the Czech Republic national team.

Currently there are plans being formulated to demolish the ground and to relocate the team to the City Stadium in Vitkovice in 2016.
