Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium History

The first iteration of Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium was built between 1974 and 1975 in order to replace Al-Sadd’s previous Tariq bin Zayed Stadium which had been home to the club for six years since first opening in 1969.

Widely recognised as one of the best football grounds in the country, al-Sadd Stadium is the de facto home of the Qatar National Team despite the existence of the larger 40,000 capacity Khalifa International Stadium.

The stadium is famous for its air conditioning system which not only cools the pitch but also the spectators inside the stands. The type of technology which will be deployed across Stadia at Qatar 2022, football matches are always played at night when it is slightly cooler.

In 2014 Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium hosted the Supercoppa Italiana between Serie A Champions Juventus, and Coppa Italia winners Napoli. Attended by a sell-out crowd of 14,000, the Partenopei defeated the Old Lady 6-5 on penalties after the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
