Estádio Serra Dourada History

Estádio Serra Dourada is a multi-purpose sports venue which first opened on March 9th 1975 with an inaugural match held between a Goias All-Star 11 and the Portuguese National Team. Owned by the Goiás state Government Serra Dourada stadium has been home to several football teams from the local area, most notably Goiás Esporte Clube, Vila Nova Futebol Clube and Atlético Clube Goianiense.

The ground’s current capacity sits at an estimated 50,049 with the record attendance set during the opening friendly when 79,610 fans saw the regional side defeat Portugal 2-1. The record was ran close three years later in 1978 when just under 78,000 fans saw Goiás lock horns with São Paulo. Known as the “Serra Dourada era”, the move to the new stadium coincided with the club’s most successful period in history.

Designed by famous architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha who would go on to win the Prtizker Prize in 2006, Estádio Serra Dourada was historically one of the five largest grounds in Brazil. Used to host the matches of Group B of the Copa America tournament in 1989, the stadium has since hosting a handful of international friendlies including a 2011 match between Brazil and the Netherlands.

Rather disappointingly the stadium didn’t feature in the 2014 World Cup despite having a larger capacity than some of the more modern stadiums such as Arena das Dunas and Itaipava Arena Pernambuco. With the Goiás region’s central location it would have been an accessible location, but for whatever reason was overlooked by the organising committee.
