London is the largest and most populous region in the United Kingdom with an urban population estimated to be between 9-11 million. Located in the south of England, on the River Thames, London has been occupied by settlers for two millenia, with its history going back to the Roman Empire who named it Londinium.

From an economic perspective the old smoke is one of the world’s leading financial centres with the 2013 global financial centre index putting London slightly ahead of New York, at positions 1 and 2 respectively.
