Basaksehir Faith Terim History
Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadi was officially inaugurated on 26th July 2014 by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who conducted the opening ceremony which included a celebrity football match. Home to Istanbul Basaksehir F.K, the club previously resided at Ataturk Olympic Stadium, however with a capacity of 76,092 the venue was far too large for a club who were only founded in 1990.
Designed by architectural firm Arima Mimarlik to satisfy UEFA’s three star stadium critera, the stadium took approximately 16 months to build at a cost of 178 million Turkish Lira. It consists of four stands connected seamlessly to create a uniform bowl-structure containing two-tiers.
Built as the centrepiece of a wider sports and entertainment complex within Istanbul’s Basaksehir district, the new 17,300 capacity stadium offers fans a much improved matchday experience. Not only are the seats much more comfortable, but as the ground is purpose-built for football there is no athletics track. This means that the levels of intimacy are much higher than the Ataturk Olympic.
The stadium is named after Fatih Termin who is widely regarded as Turkey’s most successful football manager of all time after reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2008 were they lost to rivals Germany. Having made over 320 appearances for Galatasaray as a player, and having lead the club to a UEFA Cup Final victory against Arsenal during the 1999/2000, he is also a certified club legend.
