Houston Stadium History

The stadium’s story began in the late 1990s when Houston sought a modern replacement for the famous Houston Astrodome. City leaders and the newly formed Houston Texans wanted a venue that could handle American football, major concerts, and the massive Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo while also attracting international events.

Construction began on 9 March 2000, with architects designing what would become the first NFL stadium with a fully retractable roof. After roughly 30 months of construction, the venue opened on 24 August 2002 with a preseason game between the Houston Texans and the Miami Dolphins. With seating for over 71,000 spectators and three sweeping tiers of stands, the stadium immediately ranked among the largest sports venues in the country.

Football (soccer) has been a recurring presence in Houston long before the World Cup arrived. The stadium staged matches in tournaments such as the CONCACAF Gold Cup and even hosted a semi-final during the Copa América Centenario. These events helped establish Houston as one of the United States’ most enthusiastic football cities.

That reputation helped secure the stadium a major role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Under FIFA rules, corporate names are temporarily removed, meaning the venue will be referred to simply as Houston Stadium during the tournament. The ground is scheduled to host seven matches—five in the group stage and two knockout fixtures—between 14 June and 4 July 2026.
