MetLife Stadium History
MetLife Stadium officially opened on 10 April 2010, replacing the nearby Giants Stadium, which had served the region for more than three decades. The stadium was built as part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex and cost approximately $1.6 billion to construct, making it one of the most expensive stadiums ever built in the United States at the time.
The stadium has a seating capacity of about 82,500, making it one of the largest stadiums in the NFL. Its modern design includes an open-air structure with aluminum louvers and glass features that can change colour depending on which team is playing.
Over the years, MetLife Stadium has hosted many major international events, including Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 and the Copa América Centenario Final between Argentina and Chile. The record attendance for a “soccer” match was set on July 26th 2025 in a friendly match between Manchester United and West Ham when 82,566 fans turned up.
For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, MetLife Stadium will be one of the tournament’s most important venues. It is scheduled to host eight matches, including five group-stage games, a Round of 32 match, a Round of 16 match, and the World Cup Final on 19 July 2026.
Future Developments
There are no future developments planned, however to prepare for the World Cup, renovations have been carried out to meet FIFA’s International Football Standards and requirements, including modifications to seating and the installation of a natural grass playing surface.
