Philadelphia Stadium History

Lincoln Financial Field opened on 3 August 2003 in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, replacing the older Veterans Stadium which had served the city since 1971. Construction began in 2001 and the project cost around $512 million, partly funded by public investment and partly through private partnerships and naming rights purchased by the Lincoln Financial Group.

The stadium was designed with modern features and a capacity of around 67,000 spectators, making it one of the major sports venues in the United States. Its architecture reflects Philadelphia’s industrial heritage, combining brick and steel with distinctive wing-like canopies that reference the eagle symbol of the city’s NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Since opening, the stadium has hosted a wide range of events including NFL games, international soccer matches, concerts, and major sporting events such as the CONCACAF Gold Cup and WrestleMania.

Interestingly, the first ticketed sporting event at the stadium was not an American football game but an international soccer friendly between Manchester United and Barcelona in August 2003, showing the venue’s early connection to football or soccer!

For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the stadium will play an important role as one of the selected host venues in the United States. It is scheduled to host six matches, including five group-stage games and a Round of 16 match on July 4th, 2026. During the tournament the capacity will increase slightly to around 69,000 spectators to accommodate the global audience.
