Miami Stadium History
The stadium originally opened in 1987 and has undergone several name changes throughout its history, reflecting different sponsorship agreements. Despite these changes, it has remained a central hub for major sporting and entertainment events for nearly four decades.
The venue was originally built as the home of the Miami Dolphins, a team in the National Football League. Over time, it also became the home stadium for the Miami Hurricanes football from the University of Miami. The stadium currently has a seating capacity of around 65,000, although it can be expanded for major international events.
A major renovation took place between 2015 and 2016, transforming the stadium into a more modern facility. One of the most notable additions was a large canopy roof that covers most of the seating areas while keeping the field open to the sky. This redesign improved comfort for spectators and helped the venue attract more global events.
Throughout its history, Hard Rock Stadium has hosted numerous high-profile event such as multiple Super Bowl games, including Super Bowl LIV, as well as international soccer matches, tennis tournaments, and major concerts.
It also hosted the 2024 Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia which was infamous for a delayed kick-off due to overcrowding and ticketing issues.
