Kansas City Stadium History

The stadium opened in 1972 as part of the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City. Built alongside its sister venue, Kauffman Stadium, the project was designed to give the city two purpose-built arenas rather than a single multi-sport facility. Arrowhead quickly became the home of the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, establishing itself as one of the league’s most intimidating grounds thanks to the passion and noise of its supporters.

From its earliest days, Arrowhead was known for its distinctive bowl design. Unlike many stadiums of its era, it featured steep seating tiers that kept spectators close to the field, amplifying crowd noise and creating a powerful atmosphere. Over the decades that noise has become legendary. In 2014, Chiefs fans set a Guinness World Record for the loudest crowd roar ever recorded in a stadium, further cementing Arrowhead’s reputation as one of the most electric sporting venues in the world.

A major renovation between 2007 and 2010 modernised the stadium while preserving its classic design. The $375 million upgrade introduced new seating areas, improved concourses, and updated technology while maintaining the venue’s unmistakable red-dominated aesthetic. Today the stadium holds around 76,000 spectators, making it one of the largest arenas in the United States.

Although primarily known for American football, the stadium has increasingly welcomed international soccer. Matches featuring the United States men’s national soccer team and major international friendlies have demonstrated the venue’s ability to host world-class football matches.

Those credentials helped secure Arrowhead a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During the tournament, Kansas City Stadium will host six matches, including four group-stage fixtures and two knockout ties. With its vast capacity and famously passionate crowds, the stadium promises to deliver one of the most intense atmospheres of the entire competition.
