Stade de la Meinau History
Despite it’s small stature La Meinau has hosted an impressive array of International and European fixtures including matches of the 1938 World Cup, Euro 1984 and more recently the 1988 Cup Winners’ Cup final between Mechelen and Ajax with the Belgians upsetting the odds by defeating a mutch fancied dutch team containing Danny Blind and a young Dennis Bergkamp.
Future Developments
A €100 m rennovation project was announced in May 2019 with work planned for the Summer of 2021. The ambitious project to increase the capacity to 32,300 was due to be completed by late 2023, however since the Global Pandemic, early 2024 is perhaps more realistic.
