When the 2026 FIFA World Cup arrives in North America, the venue will temporarily be renamed Los Angeles Stadium, reflecting FIFA’s policy of removing corporate sponsorship from host stadiums during the tournament.

Los Angeles Stadium History
The origins of the stadium date back to the mid-2010s, when the Los Angeles Rams sought a permanent return to the Los Angeles region after two decades in St. Louis. Team owner Stan Kroenke (Also Current Arsenal Owner) spearheaded a vast redevelopment project on the former Hollywood Park racetrack site in Inglewood.
Construction began in 2016, launching one of the largest private stadium developments in sporting history. By the time the venue opened in September 2020, the total project cost had reached an estimated $5 billion, making it the most expensive stadium ever built.
Architecturally, SoFi Stadium is unlike any traditional arena. Designed by the firm HKS, the structure features a sweeping translucent roof canopy that covers not only the stadium itself but also an adjacent entertainment plaza and performance venue. Rather than enclosing the stadium entirely, the design allows natural air to circulate through the open sides—an important feature given Southern California’s mild climate.
Inside, the stadium the seating bowl accommodates around 70,000 spectators for most events, but can expand to more than 100,000 for major occasions. Suspended above the field is the striking “Infinity Screen,” a massive oval-shaped video board that wraps around the stadium interior and is visible from every seat.
Since opening, the stadium has quickly become one of the most prominent sporting venues in the United States. It served as the stage for Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and regularly hosts international football matches, concerts, and global entertainment events. The venue is also home to both the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League.
For the 2026 World Cup, Los Angeles Stadium will play a central role in the tournament. The venue is scheduled to host eight matches, including several group-stage games and major knockout fixtures. To meet FIFA requirements, a natural grass pitch will be installed over the stadium’s usual artificial playing surface.
