Parc des Sports History

Parc des Sports d’Avignon first opened in 1966 to fulfil the city’s latent demand for sports facilities. Originally home to AC Avignonnais who plied their trade in the lower divisions of French Football,  the club relocated to the more appropriately sized, 1,000 capacity Stade Léon-Dulcy in 2009 after suffering back to back relegations.

With the stadium now vacant AC Arles-Avignon moved in at the start of the 2009/2010 season, and have made it their home ever since. Parc des Sports was expanded the following season after the club earned promotion to Ligue 1. The addition of the Northern Tribune and South Grandstand increased the capacity to 17,518.

The stadium is arguably more famous as a Rugby Venue having hosted numerous Rugby League matches over the years since hosting its first International match between France and Australia on 5th December 1982 as part of the Kangaroo Tour.

Indeed, the record attendance at Parc des Sports for any sporting event was set during a Rugby match between France and New Zealand during the 2013 World Cup. A sell-out crowd of 17,518 saw The Kiwi’s thrash the hosts 48-0. The highest attendance for football on the other hand only sits at 15,003 for a game against Olympique de Marseille.
