The inaugural match of Novara Calcio’s Stadium was held on the 11th January 1976 against Italian giants Juventus, and much to the surprise of the home side, they managed to christen their new ground with a win. At least they might have been able to christen their stadium had it been given an official name, with fans unofficially referring to it as Stadio Viale Kennedy after the surrounding road.

It wasn’t until the death of iconic 1938 World Cup winner Silvio Piola in October 1996 that the stadium was given an official name. As the striker ended his career at Novara after making over 185 appearances for the club it seemed fitting to rename the stadium in his honour, with the same thing also happening at his first club Pro Vercelli, who opted to pay tribute to Serie A’s highest ever goalscorer.

In the Summer of 2010 following Novara’s promotion to Serie B the first major renovation work was carried out on Stadio Silvio Piola with the grandstand’s roof fully replaced in addition to the enlargement of the areas of VIP seating. When the club reached the play-offs in June, the league granted Novara the right to add additional seating to the grandstand, and thus the an additional 1,328 seats were added.

After somewhat unexpectedly defeating Reggina and Padova, the club earned the right to compete in Italy’s top-flight, returning to Serie A after a period of absence lasting 55 years. Both of the Curvas were expanded in size resulting in the a capacity of 17,875 and a new state of the art lighting system was installed to better satisfy league regulations.
