Stadio Romeo Menti History
The city of Vicenza’s Comunale Stadium first opened on the 27th March 1934 under the name of “Campo Sportivo Littorio” which was constructed as part of a series of stadiums to honour the politics of Mussolini. Bologna’s Stadio Dall’Ara original known as “Stadio Littoriale” and Palermo’s La Favorita aka “Stadio Littorio” were also built as part of this Fascist inspired architectural movement.
Damaged heavily during the Second World War, it took a team of volunteers from the local area the best part of a year to restore the pitch to adequate playing condition and in 1949 the ground was renamed in honour of a former player. Romeo Menti was a winger who started his career at Vicenza Calcio before eventually setting in Turin where he became part of the iconic Grande Torino side which perished in the Superga Air disaster.
Stadio Romeo Menti slowly began to grow in the 1950s when the athletics track was removed and a new stand was erected to give the ground a capacity of around 17,000. In 1960 floodlights were installed to allow matches to be held at night, and seven years later the size of the stadium essentially doubled with new Curvas boosting the capacity up to 33,000.
The record attendance for the ground was set when 31,023 fans saw the home side draw 0-0 with Juventus in the 1970s and since the 22nd January 1978, Stadio Romeo Menti has only decreased in size. The renovations which occurred in the 1990s preceding Italia 90 saw an emphasis on spectator safety and thus spacious seating was installed which resulted in today’s capacity of around 17,163.
